How to Make a Boutonniere
Depending on the types of flowers you are using, there are 2 basic ways to make a boutonniere.
Using Floral Wire
This method is best when working with flowers such as an orchid, which does not have a long or solid stem.
First, cut your flower so that only about 1/4 th of the stem is left.
Next, using a 4” piece of floral wire, pierce the bottom of the stem or base of the flower, pull the wire through until the ends match in equal lengths.
Repeat the last step for any other flowers or greens you would like to include such as baby's breath or bear grass
Arrange all of the pieces together, making a bed for the flower with the greens
Begin wrapping at the base of the flower with green floral tape
Wrap downward at a 45 degree angle
Wrap a little bit beyond the bottom of the wire, cut the tape and finish off the bottom by curling the tape into a spiral curl
Wrapping the Stem (This is a more common method)
Cut the flower stem down to about 3”
Create a bed for the flower with greens, or use a loop of bear grass
Wrap all stems together completely with green floral tape starting a the base of the flower and down at a 45 degree angle
You can go over the tape with ribbon that coordinates with your wedding colors, or wrap the tape a little beyond the end of the stem and then curl the bottom of the tape into a spiral curl
Alternatively, leave the stem of the flower unwrapped. Affix the greenery and baby's breath with a small amount of floral wire; cover the wire with ribbon that coordinates with your wedding colors.
